Chimney Smoke Draw & Pressure Testing
There are two types of smoke test in the industry, referred to quite simply as 'Smoke Test I' and 'Smoke Test II'. The differences are quite simple as we detail below - but only one is offered as a stand-alone service, while the other is completed as part of a chimney sweep.
Smoke Test I (‘pressure test’)
A smoke test type 1 is used to test the integrity of the flue. If a chimney stack had any integrity issues, whereby the smoke was able to leak out into the property, the smoke test type 1 would highlight these areas in order for them to be remedied. To carry out this test the flue is sealed off at the fireplace, access is gained to the top of the chimney to seal off at the top of the pot. With pressurised smoke within the flue system we inspect for any smoke evacuation points (leaks). Any leakage points will be highlighted and any additional work required provided with an estimate to return to rectify.
The cost of the Smoke Test Type one is dependent on the height and access to the chimney stack. We have based our listed pricing on a typical single or two story height property with a standard height chimney accessible with roof ladders. Please bear in mind in some cases scaffolding would be required, which would of course be an added cost.
Smoke Test II (‘smoke evacuation test’)
A smoke test type 2 is carried out as standard after a chimney sweep, on systems whereby we can not confirm with certainty that the brush has cleared the top of the flue, or where we want to test the draw of the flue. It is usually done by heating the flue at first and then lighting a smoke bomb to see how well the smoke evacuates.
Our smoke evacuation test (smoke test type two) is included as part of all of our sweep packages when required.
