Standard firelighters are typically paraffin-based so are not only inferior in terms of clean eco-burning, but equally they emit a strong smell which lingers in the air, and over time penetrates the firebricks in your stove making the stove smell strongly of paraffin - and indeed potentially the whole room as a consequence!
Our sweep team was once called upon by a local customer who was deeply concerned about the smell of fumes present when using their wood burner, and of course, we rushed to attend this property as quickly as possible as it was a suspected partial chimney blockage which can be very serious - but when we arrived, and swept the chimney (which was not partially blocked), it became evident the smell was paraffin, and upon querying the customer's lighting technique, it was then revealed lots of paraffin firelighters were being used - unfortunately, this smell issue continued for some time after stopping using them, as the fire bricks, door ropes and other internals to the stove had become saturated with the lingering smell of paraffin.
We strongly advise to avoid the use of paraffin firelighters and instead opt for these clean-burning natural wood firelighters instead.
